Politics and religion are the two things you’re not supposed to talk about at a dinner party, lest you give rise to a heated argument and spoil the occasion. And yet both religion and politics are among the most important things we have to talk about. They affect our lives in significant ways. We want to give you a chance to talk about religion, at least, in an informal setting outside of Church. During Pub Theology, we gather at a local bar to talk about matters of faith over an adult beverage or two. Grace Lutheran Church will be hosting the next round of Pub Theology on Thursday, October 19, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Jupiter’s at the Crossing (2511 Village Green Place, Champaign). Please bring money for food and drinks.

A Reformation Hymn Festival with traditional and newer hymns by Lutheran composers will be held at Grace on Sunday, October 15, at 2:00 p.m. The choirs of Grace, St. Matthew, and Good Shepherd Lutheran churches will perform two choral works with string ensemble: a Telemann motet on “Ein Feste Burg” and “Verleih uns Frieden” by Mendelssohn. Dana Robinson will perform a larger organ work. Free admission with free-will offering. A reception will follow.
New Member Class Starts in October
Interested in becoming a member of this congregation? A new member class will be held for five weeks in October and November in the context of our On The Way faith-formation opportunity. We’ll meet in the Hoffmeister Room from 7:00-8:30 p.m. on the following Thursdays: October 5, 12, & 26 and November 2 & 9. Talk to Pastor Repp if you would like to attend.
On The Way Returns
Not to be redundant, but On The Way will resume in October and will incorporate new member orientation. We’ll be working through the classic booklet Baptized We Live by Daniel Erlander for the first half hour of each session, continue with focused reading of the gospel text for the coming Sunday, and finish with conversation and prayer. And of course there will be a Taizé chant thrown in for good measure. We’ll meet on the Thursdays in October and November indicated in the New Member Class announcement. If you’ve been meaning to come to On The Way, now is your chance. It’s a faith-enrichment, new-member-supporting twofer!
